 The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain arguably the most controversial event in all of contemporary history, one on which it is still not easy today to foster a secular and rational debate, as the emotional and ideological nature of negative assessments regarding the decisions that made it possible continues to prevail. The author, starting from a pragmatic and non-dogmatic viewpoint, analyzes the context and circumstances in which those who made such decisions found themselves operating. In particular, he shows how the global race for military nuclear technology began well before the Manhattan Project and offers an account of the final acts of World War II, revealing episodes likely unknown to most readers, some of which have only recently been brought to light and in the face of which it is difficult to get by with abstract “moral pronouncements”.
